Gender Scale

I had a conversation at a party at the beginning of this project.
I was discussing my practice with a group of people and I explained that I learn things that I never noticed and now that I know them I can’t unsee them.
I explained to them how female shapes and product are seen as more trend based and how shapes that are seen as more male, stay longer in fashion and are seen as more timeless. I explained it by the shape of too water carafe’s that stood on the table. I asked the group which one is more timeless and which one will go out of fashion sooner. They all chose the long carafe which in their opinion was more timeless and the one with big curves as trend based. I pointed out that the shape of the second carafe would be seen as more female because of it shapes and how these viewing point shapes our design world.

After that we discussed how we see this back in a lot of objects and things. In objects shapes and buildings. And that it is actually really sad that female shapes are seen as less serious and Innovative.

Gender scale.
We want to make people aware of how gender influences our design and that because something is dominantly male and straight doesn’t mean it’s a good design perse. I think change starts with awareness. I think like me many people are not aware of how female forms are viewed as more trend based and how deeply rooted this problem is in design.
